The stockroom facility handles a wide variety of services for all the Biology departments and is managed by one full-time and one student part time employee.  It is located on the fourth floor of the Torrey Life Sciences building, Room 461.

The responsibilities of the Stockroom position in Biology Central Services are discussed below.

  • The stockroom serves two main purposes:
    1. It is a central delivery and shipping area within the Biology area, providing prompt and personal service to all faculty and staff.
    2. Confirmation of completed purchase orders is of paramount importance to the accounting system; vendor's are paid after the receiving reports are entered in the FRS System and verified by Accounts Payable.  A high degree of accuracy is required in this part of the job.
  • The stockroom staff receives, unpacks and delivers supplies and equipment on approximately 2,800 purchase orders, and 3,000 transfer vouchers annually.  This includes:
    • entering receiving reports
    • maintaining files on orders and packing slips
    • tracking down problems or late orders
    • recording price changes
    • receives and delivers radioactive packages, perishable packages, packages from UPS and from Central Warehouse.
  • In addition, chemicals and supplies are stocked here for dispensing to the approximately 160 staff members, almost 200 graduate students for the teaching courses and hundreds of research grants.  Inventory record keeping, keeping stock up-to-date, ordering and charging proper sources are all part of this process.
  • We maintain a general stock of chemicals for faculty, staff, and teaching labs, both for emergency supplies provide the more common reagents on an "available immediately" basis.
