The graduate coordinator has varied responsibilities across the three Biology departments and Biotechnology with respect to graduate admissions, employment and awards.  These responsibilities are discussed below by category.

 

Graduate Admissions

  • Report to about 20 faculty on graduate admission committees and program chairs for the following fields of study: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Botany, Cell Biology, Ecology, Entomology, Genetics, Microbiology, Physiology and Zoology.
  • Respond to more than 500 inquiries from prospective graduate students covering all the above.
  • Send a letter, Peterson guide, and  brochures for each inquiry and then arrange for applications and catalogs to be sent from the Graduate Admissions Office.
  • Receive and process applications for graduate programs.
  • Set up files for "accepts" and process "rejects".
  • Arrange for visits from prospective graduate students including:
    • arrange for housing
    • set up interview schedules
    • process payment vouchers for housing
    • process travel expenses.
       

Applications for Graduate Programs:

Graduate Awards

  • Report to sevenmembers and chairs of awards committee.
  • Sent award letters to new and current students.
  • Assisted in the Assignments of graduate students for all Biology 100's, EEB and MCB courses.
  • Process employment authorizations for graduate assistants (teaching) for the Fall semester and approximately 45 additional for the Spring semester.
  • Processed at least 40 to 45 employment authorizations for graduate assistants (research) paid from faculty grants.
  • Maintained files for all current graduate students in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Molecular and Cell Biology, tracking progress of:  PhD and MS candidates.

Work Study

  • Processed approximately 76 employment authorizations for graduate and undergraduate for Summer 1997, Fall 1997 and Spring 1998. Maintained data base for 22 pay periods making sure students did not exceed the allotment of need based funds.

Miscellaneous

  • Maintains schedules, appointments and correspondence for Assistant Dean.  Arrange meetings with various faculty and outside personnel for New Biology/Physics Building, Academic Renovations personnel, etc.

    • Pre-doctoral Summer Fellowships
    • Demi-Fellowships
    • Named Fellowships
    • Outstanding Scholars Program
    • Howard Hughes Fellowship and Evolution
    • Ecology & Conservation of Biodiversity Training Grant
  • Maintain data base keeping track of Trainees on the Biodiversity Training Grant.  Includes:
    • stipend payments
    • insurance payments
    • grant advice for tuition and fees
    • etc.
  • Provide data on all graduate students to various faculty members several times a month covering:
    • courses taught, years of support
    • types of support
    • academic records
    • test score results
    • fields of study
    • plans of study
    • general exam results
    • etc.
  • Provide data on:
    • all applicants to all Biology graduate programs
    • numbers of applications
    • degree sought
    • fields of study
    • test results
    • grade point averages
    • etc.
  • Maintain good working relationship with various personnel on and off campus:
    • Graduate School
    • Dean's Office
    • Payroll, Dept. of Human Resources
    • Student Employment
    • Financial Aid Office
    • Bursar's Office
    • Accounting Office
    • Extended and Continuing Education
    • Marine Sciences Dept. Avery Point
    • Health Center Farmington
    • UConn at Stamford
    • etc.
  • One of the Main Office personnel that helps to handle the incoming telephone calls and assists with the sorting and distribution of mail. 
  • Supervises student labor personnel.
  • Talk to, re-direct, inform, enlighten, and handle with care approximately 25 misguided souls per week this includes, faculty, graduate students and undergraduates.
