Academic Renovations
Paul W. Betts, Director
David Koehler, Projects Director The responsibilities of the Academic Renovations Unit of Biology Central Services are discussed below. The Academic Renovations Unit, in its fourteenth year of operation continues to be respond to the needs of the academic mission of the University by successfully carrying out renovation projects throughout the campus and at off campus locations in a prompt and cost efficient manner. Funding for Academic Renovations jobs in approximately equal measure from capital money specifically allocated for deferred maintenance through the Chancellor's office (bond-funded jobs) and from individual schools/colleges and departments (self-funded jobs). Academic Renovations responds to work requests that lie between routine maintenance and projects which would require going through the construction bid process. Academic Renovations provides the planning, design, logistical support and supervision of Task Labor employees that allows renovations projects of all sorts to go forward across the University of Connecticut campuses. The Academic Renovations model has proven successful and has been particularly beneficial to incoming faculty. The customer-friendly, detail-oriented involvement of faculty in their space design optimizes the potential for creating a safe and functional research environment. Academic Renovations receives engineering support from the University of Connecticut's Office of Architectural and Engineering Services. In addition, Academic Renovations continues to provide Building Services support to the Biology departments, and when needed, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. New building construction will make this function even more necessary in the years to come. Timeliness in responding to programmatic needs has been a major factor in the success of this department and is considered by many in the University administration, not only the recipients, to be more critical than the construction costs. This is especially true where federal grant requirements are not met in a timely manner and are thereby put in jeopardy, or if an interruption of ongoing research should occur which was unavoidable. Academic Renovations is comprised of the following University employees:
On average Academic Renovations employs the task labor of one (1) draftsman and eight (8) full time craftsmen. |
